What is speech training?

Speech training is the targeted training of your voice, breathing, pronunciation and expression – so you speak more clearly, understandably and convincingly. Unlike simply memorising rhetoric rules, it is about HOW you sound: voice placement, emphasis, pace and the deliberate pause.

Whether in a meeting, on stage, on a podcast or in everyday life – those who speak consciously come across as more assured and are better understood. Good speech training is not a matter of talent but of practice: with the right techniques and regular reps, anyone can noticeably develop their voice.

Who is speech training for?

Speech training pays off for anyone who speaks a lot or with impact: leaders and frequent presenters, teachers and lecturers, podcasters and streamers, people in sales or customer contact – and everyone who wants to speak more clearly and confidently in daily life.

It is especially valuable if you mumble, lose your voice when nervous, or simply want to learn to speak better without booking an expensive one-on-one coach.

How does speech training work?

Effective speech training builds on a few blocks: breath support (from the diaphragm rather than the chest), articulation (clear consonants and open vowels), voice placement and resonance (a full, carrying sound), as well as pace, emphasis and pausing.

Rather than practising everything at once, it works best step by step: short, regular sessions beat rare marathons. Structured exercise series are made for exactly that – they take you from warming up your voice to complex speaking situations.

Language training or speech training – what's the difference?

The two terms are often confused. Language training usually means learning or improving a language – vocabulary, grammar, often a foreign language. Speech training goes deeper: it trains HOW you speak – voice, pronunciation, emphasis and presence, in the language you already know.

If you want to speak more clearly and expressively as a native speaker, speech training is what you need. That's exactly what the Besser Sprechen app is built for – and the exercises also sharpen your overall verbal expression.

6 effective speaking exercises for home

You can try these speaking exercises right away, with no equipment. Record yourself on your phone – that way you can hear your progress.

1

Diaphragmatic breathing

Place a hand on your belly and breathe so that your abdomen rises – not your shoulders. This deep breathing is the foundation of a carrying, calm voice.

2

Cork articulation

Say a sentence with a cork or pen loosely between your teeth, then without it. Your pronunciation becomes noticeably clearer afterwards because the speech muscles had to work harder.

3

Humming for resonance

Hum a long note and feel the vibration on your lips and nose. This activates your resonance spaces and gives your voice more sound and volume.

4

Reading aloud with a recording

Read aloud for five minutes daily and record yourself. On playback you spot mumbling, pace and emphasis – and get clearer week by week.

5

Tongue-twister progression

Start slow and clean, then increase the pace without losing clarity. Tongue-twisters train the precision and agility of your tongue.

6

The deliberate pause

Mark the spots in a text where you consciously pause. Pauses give your words weight, take out the pace and make you sound more assured.
